On the social web, it can be hard to tell. A new algorithm can detect when a Twitter hashtag or meme has had an artificial boost from corporate advertising dollars. Twitter normally labels tweets that have been paid for or sponsored. But hashtags can be promoted by other means, such as via websites or TV. says Emilio Ferrara of the University of Southern California, who led the work. His team trained the algorithm by having it learn how a promoted meme labeled as such by Twitter looks and circulates.
