More than 200 years ago, naturalist Alexander von Humboldt recounted seeing electric eels leaping out of the water to attack horses in the Amazon. The story was thought to be an exaggeration--nobody else had witnessed a similar assault. Until now, Kenneth Catania from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, saw the eels jumping when he used a net to transfer them to a different tank in his lab.
