El artículo presenta los resultados de los estudios que sobre cooperativismo rural el Instituto de Estudios Rurales ha venido realizando, desde hace más de quince años, en el sur del departamento de Santander, Colombia. Con base en estos estudios se muestra que las cooperativas de la zona son efectivas agentes de Desarrollo Rural. Se describen sus principales características, tanto en los aspectos organizacionales y administrativos, como el papel que juegan al interior de la economía regional.
Culmina el artículo con el planteamiento de los retos más importantes que deben enfrentar hoy en día.
The article presents the results of studies on rural cooperati vism which have been carried out by Institute of Rural Studies for over fifteen years in the southem region of the Sabtabder Province, Colombia. Such studies show that farming cooperatives in this area are effective agents of Rural Deve]opment. Its main characteristics are decribeb both at the organizational and administrative levels, and their role within the regional economy is also analyzed.
The article ends with the inclusion ofthe most important challenges that these farming cooperatives face nowadays.
