This article discusses research, which was published in the January 29, 2009 issue of "Science," indicating that ridges such as those on human fingerprints increase sensitivity to vibrations. These experimenters compared the effectiveness of ridged and smooth sensor tips to determine whether ridge patterns magnified the frequency of vibrations. This study is believed to explain the connection between Pacinian corpuscles and fingerprints.
