The article describes the computer security flaws exposed by the Conficker worm in April 2009. The motivations for hackers and criminal organizations to create worm-style computer viruses are discussed, which include notoriety, shutting down specific Web sites, or financial gain. The fact that the spread of Conficker revealed that many Microsoft Windows users do not install urgent security updates is also noted.
