  • The article offers information on the 1918 influenza pandemic which used occurred because of the lack of preexisting immune protection, poor sanitation which resulted in disease transmission, and lack of antiviral drugs and flu vaccines. Topics discussed include role played by mucosal surfaces in protecting against influenza; development of "universal influenza vaccines"; and benefits of immune system and antibodies in protecting against influenza.
