The editors lament the decision by President George W. Bush to reduce funding for the National Children's Study in 2006, and to eliminate it completely and order it to be terminated in the 2007 budget. The program was mandated by the U.S. Congress in the Children's Health Act of 2000. The study would have followed 100 thousand American children from before birth, until their 21st birthday. Its objectives were to study the interplay between biology and environment that contributes to children's development and health.
