Vaccination against human papilloma virus has more than halved the number of HPV infections--the leading cause of cervical cancer--in US teen girls, despite its low uptake. Growing evidence that HPV vaccination works may convince more countries to give it to teenage boys, as HPV also causes cancer of the throat and anus, as well as genital warts.
