  • The article focuses on the history of art exhibitions. The article discusses the formation of artists' independent organizations to establish display space outside the academies in the late 19th-century, the inception of biennials beginning with the Venice Biennale in 1895 and independent curators such as Harald Szeemann. The article goes on to discuss the interest in biennials in the mid-1980s and the addition of biennials in Istanbul, Turkey, Gwangju, India and Johannesburg, South Africa.
