Resumen de Una proposta per il Maestro della Croce N. 434 degli Uffizi

Angelo Tartuferi

  • A small and exquisite "Virgin and Child" is here attributed to the so-called Master of Cross no. 434 in the Uffizi Gallery, Florence. The painting, illustrated here for the first time, is datable to the middle years of the thirteenth century or shortly thereafter. This newly-discovered work proves that the painter -an unquestionable protagonist of Florentine art in the mid-1200s -painted small-scaled pictures for private devotion as well as important public commissions such as his eponymous work in the Uffizi and the grand "Virgin and Child Enthroned with seventeen Scenes from the Life of the Virgin Mary and the Magi" in the Pushkin Museum, Moscow. The article affirms the fundamental role played by this still unknown artista in the evolution of Coppo di Marcovaldo, and his participation in the mosaic ceiling decoration of the Baptistery in Florence.
