Resumen de Lorenzo Lotto: una nuova 'Adorazione del Bambino'

Simone Facchinetti

  • The discovery of an unpublished "Adoration of the Christ Child" offeres an occasion for in-depth study of Lorenzo Lotto's creative precess in the 1540s. The reiteration of compositional inventions by saving and re-using drawings forms the basis for a practice adopted by the Venetian painter during the years immediately preceding his permanent move to the Marches. In this instance, the "Adoration of the Child" is directly based on an idea realised in about 1521 and known through a seventeenth-century copy of one of his Bergamasque works, housed in the Accademia in Venice. Infrared reflectography of the wood panel appears to show that Lotto held on to a drawing of this detail, which he then used in a painting destined for private devotion.
