  • In 1648 the painter brothers Giovan Franceso (Guercino) and Paolo Antonio Barbieri drafted a hitherto unpublished will, now housed in the Fondation Custodia in Paris. The document -with a provenance from their family archives, as proved by the first sheet, inscribed "B n. 25" -is an autograph manuscript by Paolo Antonio. The two artists spoke as one, asserting that their business and all their properties, in both Cento and Bologna, were jointly owned. Their partnership was not only tied by bonds of family and affection but by profesional management. The document casts light on this latter aspect, and on the Bolognese phase of Guercino, who was to lose his beloved brother and business partner in the following year, 1649.
