El artículo presenta el estado de la historia del Derecho del mar al tiempo del descubrimiento de El Salvador, recoge las principales normas de los Estados latinoamericanos en lo relativo a las reclamaciones a propósito de las zonas marítimas y termina refiriéndose a la contribución de El Salvador al Derecho del mar, en particular la “doctrina Meléndez” formulada con motivo de la diferencia con Nicaragua, a comienzos del siglo XX, en relación a las aguas del Golfo de Fonseca.

The article present the state of the history of the Law of the Sea at the time of the discovery of El Salvador, enunciates the main national rules of Latin America states in their claims over maritime areas and concludes by stating the contribution of El Salvador to the Law of the Sea, in particular the “Meléndez doctrine” created due to the dispute with Nicaragua, in the early twentieth century, regarding the waters of the Gulf of Fonseca.
