The essay concerns the topic of practical wisdom (phronesis, prudentia). After tracing it back to its ancient and medieval roots, and following its path through modern and contemporary thought, the essay develops an original view of this virtue. In particular, it stresses its synthetic role of informing and unifying ethical and epistemic virtues, and underlines the role played in its development by virtuous others. Finally, the essay draws the main consequences of such views as for the ethics of intelligence and philosophy of education.
