The article reports on a study by biologists at the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration suggesting that dolphins change the frequency, amplitude, and duration of their vocalizations in order to be heard over the noise of boats and other man-made disturbances. According to the study, dolphins needed to take in additional oxygen and burn additional calories in order to produce louder sounds.
