  • The author reflects on his use of epidemiological data in reducing homicide rates in Cali, Colombia during his term as mayor from 1992 to 1994 and from 2012 on. He states in his first term his use of statistics found the majority of deaths were caused by firearms used by people under the influence and by restricting alcohol sales in public places after 2 a.m. and suspending gun permits in public places, he reduced the homicide rate. He mentions increases in police presence and youth employment.
