The article discusses how astronomers are observing disappearing stars, or those that fail to explode, in nearby galaxies as part of research into the formation of black holes. Information is provided on a method of surveying supernovas proposed by Chris Kochanek of Ohio State University based on observations of a red supergiant in the galaxy NGC 6946.
