The article looks at efforts to develop small-scale, affordable fusion reactors. Particular focus is given to projects funded through the U.S. Accelerating Low-Cost Plasma Heating and Assembly (ALPHA) program, including a project by the firm Magneto-Inertial Fusion Technologies. Details on projects by the firms General Fusion, Tri Alpha Energy, and Lockheed Martin are presented. The International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) and the National Ignition Facility (NIF) are also discussed.
