  • The article discusses the use of submersibles to systematically explore the ocean's deepest trenches. Topics include an April 2014 mission by robotic submersible Nereus into the Pacific Ocean's Kermadec Trench, near New Zealand, led by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) and deep sea research priorities, such as how organisms survive the immense water pressure, whether life on earth began there, and whether compounds found in deep-sea creatures could lead to novel drugs.
