  • In the middle of the Salar de Uyuni, a fleck of volcanic rock called Isla del Pescado rises out of the salt. Its peaks are furred with 3-meter-high cacti, though plants here grow just a centimeter per year. Salt stretches out in every direction as far as the eye can see. Concentrated in layers of brine beneath this expanse, 3800 meters up in the Bolivian Andes, is more lithium than anywhere else on the planet. Hodson determines whether the salt flats of the Bolivian Andes can be exploited.
