Resumen de Anthrax: a biological weapons challenge for veterinary medicine

Susan D. Jones

  • How did anthrax, an ancient disease of livestock and agriculture, become a biological weapon? What roles did veterinarians play in this historical process? Using declasified archival sources, this article traces the roles of some American veterinarians and veterinary institutes in weaponizing Bacillus anthracis, thus helping to create a new identity for antharx as a biological weapon. Most of these activieties occurred during the world wars of the past century, leading to technical, professional and ethical challenges for the veterinary profession.
