  • The article analyzes the reasons behind politicians and the mass media's gloomy assessment of 21st century living, despite proofs that the period is more peaceful and more prosperous than past eras. Topics discussed include the reasons for the media's tendency to report more on negative developments, rather than on good ones and the role of the endowment effect, or the tendency of humans to value what they own more than what they do not own, in the prevalence of gloomy views about the world.
