Shining red light on skin or cells in a dish gives an instant energy boost that could help heal wounds, relieve pain and combat medical conditions such as male infertility. The healing effect was first reported 40 years ago, but the way it works was a mystery. Now it seems that the red light alters the physical properties of water, which turbocharges the chemical reactions that provoke a cell's energy, according to work led by Andrei Sommer of the University of Ulm in Germany.
