  • There is a matter of discussion the best way to administer calcitriol in patients with end stage renal disease on dialysis. In hemodialysis it seems that the efficacy intravenously is similar to that achieved in bolus orally. In peritoneal dialysis it has not been assessed the efficacy intraperitoneally. In order to study this fact we have designed a trial in vitro that consists introducing 1 or 2 ug of calcitriol in 2 liters peritoneal bags, with 1,36% and 2,27% glucose concentration, from Baxter and Fresenius. After injection, samples were obtained from each bag every 15 minutes until 90 min. measuring calcitriol levels. The results showed that calcitriol had disappeared from the bags at 15 minutes samples. Repeating the trial in glass recipients calcitriol remained almost at basal levels until the end of the study. In conclusion it seems that calcitriol adheres to peritoneal bags, being thus ineffective by this way to treat secondary hyperparathyroidism.
