    • The article discusses what the author refers to as his failed attempt to gain access to small-scale gold miners in Colombia, and it mentions public health concerns in relation to the use of mercury to extract gold from ore. According to the article, the methylated form of mercury is toxic and health-related complications depend on dosage level and exposure length. The high rates of infectious diseases such as HIV at informal gold mining sites are examined.
