  Teniendo como marco temporal el periodo que va de mediados del siglo XIX a finales del XX, el presente artículo analiza la figura del coleccionista de arte, en función de las distintas motivaciones que lo impulsan a coleccionar. Para ello, hemos examinado un amplio abanico de casos particulares, con el fin de identificar rasgos comunes que nos permitan agruparlos según dichas motivaciones. Tarea en verdad compleja, pues estas suelen aparecer estrechamente ligadas entre sí, o conviviendo incluso en un mismo individuo. La clasificación o tipi­ficación que aquí se ofrece tiene como objetivo avanzar en el estudio de un personaje, tan intenso y a la vez tan contradictorio, como es el coleccionista de arte.

  Taking as a temporary framework the period from the mid-nineteenth century to the end of the twentieth, this article analyzes the figure of the art collector, based on the different motivations that drive it to collect. For this, we have examined a wide range of particular cases, in order to identify common features that allow us to group them according to these motiva­tions. Task in truth complex, because these usually appear closely linked to each other, or coexisting even in the same individual. The purpose of the classification or categorization offered here is to advance the study of a character, so intense and at the same time so contradictory, as is the art collector.
