The inscriptions of the mosaics of the Scarsella of Florence's baptistery contain some of the few testimonies of the his ancient history. Often it was not considered the four-part division and the reference of the date to Jacobus's work was taken for granted. The contribution recounts the epigraph from a textual and figurative point of view. The new reading that you propose allows for better contextualization the work of Jacobus in the thirteenth century Italian art. The Franciscan artist is very aware of his value and proves to know the so-called 'neoellenica' culture, particularly in relation to Assisi. In Florence the opening to the Byzantine culture also leaves other evidence and constitutes one of the most important phenomena for the generation of Coppo di Marcovaldo, then for the continuation of mosaics in the dome and therefore for Cimabue's education.
