  • Resumen
    • This article investigates the identity of the sitter of the 'Portrait of a Young Lady' by Scipione Pulzone da Gaeta. A successful portraitist, Pulzone worked extensively for aristocratic families in Rome in the late sixteenth century. By comparing this portrait with other works by Pulzone and by analysing visual and textual evidences, this article challenges previous identifications of the sitter and suggests that the young lady portrayed is Lavinia della Rovere, the daughter of Guidobaldo, Duke of Urbino, and of Vittoria Farnese, sister of the powerful Cardinal Alessandro. The likely occasion for the execution of this portrait is the unsuccessful marriage negotiation with Giacomo Boncompagni, son of pope Gregory XIII, which took place in Rome in 1575.
