    Neste artigo, de carácter exploratorio, abordamos a relación entre cultura e humor. O noso obxectivo é mostrar o papel predominante do humor na cultura actual e avaliar a capacidade explicativa das tres teorías clásicas. As contribucións teóricas máis importantes sobre o humor no ámbito das ciencias sociais foron a teoría da superioridade, a teoría do alivio e a teoría da incongruencia. Na nosa opinión estas teorías non son incompatibles: todas están de acordo na natureza social do humor, aínda que compiten en canto á explicación causal ou funcional. Nas culturas posmodernas, moi competitivas e agresivas, o individualismo parece correlacionar positivamente co humor agresivo. O narcisismo e o hedonismo contribúen a expandir este humor agresivo. Neste sentido, estimamos que a teoría da superioridade mantén aínda unha considerable eficiencia explicativa do papel do humor nas culturas posmodernas.

    In this article we explore the relationship between culture and humor. Our aim is to evaluate the explanatory capacity of the three classical theories about humor and emphasize the role of humor in postmodern cultures The most important theoretical contributions on humor in the field of social sciences have been the theory of superiority, the theory of relief and the theory of incongruence. In our opinion, these theories are not incompatible: They all agree on the social nature of humor, although they compete in terms of causal or functional explanation. In postmodern culture, which is individualistic and highly competitive, aggressive humor seems to be the prevalent type of humor. Moreover, narcissism and hedonism contribute to expand further this aggressive mood. In this sense, we believe that the theory of superiority still provides a remarkable explanatory efficiency of the role of humor in postmodern cultures.
