En este artículo, de carácter exploratorio, abordamos la relación entre cultura y humor. Nuestro objetivo es mostrar el papel predominante del humor en la cultura actual y evaluar la capacidad explicativa de las tres teorías clásicas. Las contribuciones teóricas más importantes sobre el humor en el ámbito de las ciencias sociales han sido la teoría de la superioridad, la teoría del alivio y la teoría de la incongruencia. En nuestra opinión estas teorías no son incompatibles: todas están de acuerdo en la naturaleza social del humor, aunque compiten en cuanto a la explicación causal o funcional. En las culturas posmodernas, muy competitivas y agresivas, el individualismo parece correlacionar positivamente con el humor agresivo. El narcisismo y el hedonismo contribuyen a expandir este humor agresivo. En este sentido, estimamos que la teoría de la superioridad mantiene todavía una considerable eficiencia explicativa del papel del humor en las culturas posmodernas.

In this article we explore the relationship between culture and humor. Our aim is to evaluate the explanatory capacity of the three classical theories about humor and emphasize the role of humor in postmodern cultures The most important theoretical contributions on humor in the field of social sciences have been the theory of superiority, the theory of relief and the theory of incongruence. In our opinion, these theories are not incompatible: They all agree on the social nature of humor, although they compete in terms of causal or functional explanation. In postmodern culture, which is individualistic and highly competitive, aggressive humor seems to be the prevalent type of humor. Moreover, narcissism and hedonism contribute to expand further this aggressive mood. In this sense, we believe that the theory of superiority still provides a remarkable explanatory efficiency of the role of humor in postmodern cultures.
