  El mundo está ante el urgente dilema de cómo vamos a abastecer la demanda energética de modo medioambientalmente responsable, tecnológicamente factible y económicamente viable. El AP1000 de Westinghouse Electric Company es una respuesta innovadora y más segura para hacer frente a este desafío. En este artículo se tratan varios temas relativos al AP1000. Para empezar se explica el concepto de seguridad pasiva y algunos sistemas pasivos son brevemente tratados; en segundo lugar se explica el concepto de diseño modular y sus ventajas en cuanto a reducción de costes de inversión y tiempo de construcción. Por último se muestra el estado de los programas de construcción de AP-1000 en el mundo así como de expectativas para el futuro más cercano

  The world is in the urgent need on deciding how we are going to meet energy demand, in an environmentally responsible, technologically feasible, and economically viable way .Westinghouse Electric Company AP1000TM is an innovative, safer response to meet this challenge. In this article several aspects regarding AP1000 are covered. To begin with Passive Safety Concept and some Passive Systems are briefly explained; secondly the Modular Design concept and its advantages reducing investment cost and construction time are discussed. Finally and update of AP1000TM construction programs throughout the world as well as the near future expectations are shown.
