The article discusses a report in the May 22 “Journal of Natural Products,” by researchers at the University of Eastern Piedmont, Italy, and colleagues, who think they have identified the herb responsible for the deaths of Phoenician colonists. The herb called hemlock water dropwort, Oenanthe crocata, contains a toxin that causes facial muscles to contract producing what appears to be a grin. A brief historical overview of its use is presented.
