  • The article discusses the origin of the tectonic plates and the concept proposed by scientist Harry H. Hess of Princeton University who hypothesized that the Earth's crust was mobile and driven by internal convective motions of the Earth. Topics include one of the earliest ideas regarding continental drift, as told in the book "The Origin of Continents and Oceans," by Alfred Wegener, how and where additional crust is formed, and how continental drift is powered by the heat from Earth's interior.
