With respect to the increasing access to – and popularization of – knowledge that marks the nineteenth century, the French literary field tends to offer a series of ambivalent reactions oscillating between fascination and revulsion, adherence to the principles of democratization and outright mockery. In order to better scrutinize the grey areas of what we could call a literary libido sciendi, three approaches are adopted here : the first focuses on the ways in which enunciative posture (especially in Balzac) both repeats and differs in crucial respects from those adopted in popular scientific discourse ; the second consists in an approach to the question that passes through the mediations of parody and other generic or discursive deterritorializations of the scientific field (e.g., dictionaries and textbooks) ; the third consists in taking stock of the way in which scientific figures are featured in works of fiction. Following these three analytic strands, we propose to interrogate the literary field’s recuperation and problematization of discursive forms and figures broadly associated with a generic “scientificity”—a tense recuperation which plays a major role in the construction of the nineteenth-century social imaginary.

À l’égard de la vulgarisation des savoirs qui rythme le XIXe siècle, le champ littéraire français offre une série de réactions ambivalentes, oscillant entre fascination, adhésion au principe de démocratisation et raillerie. Pour étudier ces zones grises de la libido sciendi littéraire, trois prises sont ici saisies : la première se situe au niveau d’une posture énonciative qui, chez Balzac en particulier, rejoue en certains points celle adoptée par les vulgarisateurs scientifiques tout en s’en distinguant dans le même temps ; la seconde s’envisage par le détournement de genres associés au domaine scientifique (le dictionnaire, le manuel, la physiologie) ; la troisième, enfin, est constituée par la figuration d’un personnel scientifique dans la fiction. En suivant ces trois directions, on se propose ici de questionner les mécanismes de reprise et de mise à distance de formes et de figures associées au domaine scientifique qui se déploient dans l’univers des lettres et contribuent à nourrir l’imaginaire social de l’époque

Im Hinblick auf die Popularisierung von Wissen, die das 19. Jahrhundert prägte, bot der Bereich der französischen Literatur eine Reihe ambivalenter Reaktionen, die zwischen Faszination und Abscheu, Festhalten an den Prinzipien der Demokratisierung und offensichtlichem Spott oszillierten. Um diese Grauzonen der literarischen libido sciendi zu untersuchen, werden drei Ansätze verfolgt : Der erste untersucht, wie sich erklärende Äußerungen (besonders bei Balzac) sowohl wiederholen als auch in entscheidender Hinsicht von jenen Stellen im populärwissenschaftlichen Diskurs unterscheiden ; der zweite stützt sich auf das Abändern von Genres wissenschaftlicher Arbeiten (z.B. Wörterbücher, Handbücher Physiologie) ; der dritte beschäftigt sich mit wissenschaftlichen Figuren in fiktionalen Arbeiten. Ausgehend von diesen drei Ansätzen werden die Mechanismen der Wiederaufnahme und der Distanzierung von mit Wissenschaft verbundenen Formen und Figuren hinterfragt, die sich im literarischen Universum entfalteten und zur Konstruktion der sozialen Vorstellungswelt des 19. Jahrhunderts beitrugen.
