Los ingenieros de Caminos, Canales y Puertos tienen que dar un vuelco estratégico a su actividad y la 4ª revolución industrial puede ser, además de una exigencia laboral y productiva, una gran oportunidad profesional. La tecnología permite abordar los problemas con mayor profundidad, de forma más flexible, multidimensional y multifacética tanto en lo relacionado con los actores o dominios claves como con la eficiencia y utilización de la técnica y los recursos. Pero la actividad no sólo deberá integrarse en el mundo digital, sino también reformularse pensando en grande conectándola con los problemas que afectan al planeta y a la vida de sus ciudadanos. Además, los Ingenieros de Caminos, Canales y Puertos sin perder la formación y dimensión intelectual que les caracteriza, tienen que incorporarse a las nuevas corrientes sociales, y ejercer una ingeniería para todos los ciudadanos, una ingeniería útil, pertinente, eficiente y con un coste razonable, sin que ello implique perdida alguna ni en la técnica ni de la calidad o seguridad.

Civil Engineers must apply a strategic rethinking to their work, and the fourth industrial revolution may be a great professional opportunity as well as something that is demanding in terms of work and production. Technology means that problems can be addressed in greater depth, on a more flexible, multidimensional and multifaceted basis, in terms of both the key players and domains, and the efficiency and use of techniques and resources. However, their work must not only be integrated into the digital world, but must a/so be reformulated while thinking about the broader picture, linking it with the problems that affect the planet and the life of its citizens. Furthermore, without neglecting their training and intellectual dimension, Civil Engineers must be a part of new social trends, and engage in engineering far all citizens –engineering that is useful, relevant and efficient and at a reasonable cost, without this entailing any decline in technique, quality or safety.
