A team led by Wako Aoki of the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan in Tokyo and his colleagues have analyzed an ancient star named SDSS J0018-0939. They found that it appears to have been born out of the dust left behind by an exploding population III star. The ancient star contains a fair amount of iron, but little by way of heavier metals such as strontium and barium.
