Acting like a social media start-up, Gary King at Harvard University and his team built a fake Web site, bought a domain name and server space inside China, and populated the site with their own posts. Then they obtained a copy of the software that helps Chinese Web site administrators censor their content so they stay out of trouble with the authorities. Luckily, the software's customer service teams were happy to advise on how to appease the Chinese government. King suspects the government is more worried about regime stability than anything else, so exerts most pressure on posts that could jeopardize its power.
