    The following article regards an episode that occurred during the First Fernandine War: the Portuguese naval blockade to the city of Seville in 1369- 1370. The main objective will be to expose the adverse conditions in which the Portuguese fleet survived the winter stationed in the Guadalquivir River. That will lead us to look at the logistics of this whole enterprise. How did the fleet get supplied? What kind of diet would be consumed? How did the fleet survive so long anchored in the same place? I realized that there was a supply line between the fleet and the kingdom; a vessel would come to the Algarve, as well as to Lisbon in order to collect food and return to Guadalquivir to supply the anxious fleet. Through the description of Fernão Lopes, it was possible to verify that even then, the Portuguese fleet went through several difficulties, quite possibly due to the fact that food was not brought in sufficient quantities, resulting in diseases and several desertions. That fact that winter was coming helped worsening the fleet’s situation. Finally the blockage was lifted up by the escape of the Portuguese fleet due to the appearance of the Castilian galleys. I hope that with this article I can draw attention to this interesting episode, as well as to the study of the military logistics issue, so relevant to the success of an expedition.

    O seguinte artigo debruça-se sobre um episódio que decorreu durante a Primeira Guerra Fernandina: o bloqueio realizado pela frota portuguesa a Sevilha em 1369-1370. O principal objectivo será expor as condições adversas nas quais a frota portuguesa sobreviveu ao inverno estacionada no Guadalquivir, o que nos leva a olhar para a questão da logística de todo este empreendimento. Como se abastecia uma frota? Que tipo de alimentos seria consumido? Como conseguiu a frota sobreviver tanto tempo parada no mesmo local? Percebemos que existia uma linha de abastecimentos entre a frota e o reino; uma embarcação viria ao Algarve e a Lisboa recolher viveres e regressava ao Guadalquivir para abastecer a ansiosa frota. Através da descrição de Fernão Lopes, verificamos que, mesmo assim, a frota portuguesa passou diversas dificuldades, muito possivelmente, devido ao facto de os víveres não terem sido levados em quantidades suficientes, resultando em doenças e diversas deserções. De igual modo, o facto de ser inverno não terá ajudado a situação portuguesa. Terminamos relatando a fuga da frota portuguesa em resposta ao aparecimento de galés castelhanas. Esperamos que com este artigo possamos chamar a atenção para este episódio tão interessante, bem como para as questões ligadas à logística militar, tão relevantes para o sucesso de uma expedição.
