En la obra de Roger de Howden (s. xii) se menciona un puerto de identificación problemática situado entre el ducado de Aquitania y el reino de Navarra; por otro lado, la tradición cartográfica de los ss. xiv-xvi ubica un puerto de nombre similar en la bahía de Pasajes. El De viis maris, itinerario marítimo atribuido al mismo Howden, proporciona información más detallada que nos permite conjugar todos los datos y postular para la época la existencia de un importante puerto hasta ahora desconocido que, igual que el antiguo puerto romano de Oiasso, estaría emplazado en la desembocadura del Bidasoa y vendría identificado con el nombre de Oiartzun

Roger de Howden-en lanetan (xii. mendea) Akitaniako dukerriaren eta Nafarroako erreinuaren artean legokeen –eta identifikazio gardenik ez duen– portu bat aipatzen da;
bestalde, xiv-xvi. mendeetako tradizio kartografikoak antzeko izena duen portu bat kokatzen du Pasaiako badian. Howden berari atxikitzen zaion De viis maris izeneko itinerarioak informazio xeheagoa ematen du; honi esker, ditugun datu guztiak bateratu daitezke eta honako hipotesi hau proposatu dezakegu: garai hartan orain arte ezagutzen ez genuen portu bat zen zeina, Oiasso erromatar portua bezalaxe, Bidasoaren bokalean zegoen eta Oiartzun izenarekin ezagutzen zen.

In Roger de Howden’s work (xiith century) a harbour of problematic identification is mentioned, situated between the Duchy of Aquitaine and the Kingdom of Navarre; apart from that, the cartographic tradition of the xivth-xvith centuries puts a harbour of similar name in the bay of Pasajes. De viis maris, a maritime itinerary also ascribed to Howden, provides more detailed information that allows us to combine all the dates and postulate for that time the existence of an important harbour so far unknown which, as the Roman harbour of Oiasso, would be placed in the last stretch of the Bidasoa and indentified with the name of Oiartzun.
