This article describes and analyzes, in a preliminary way, the participation of women and men in the affirmative actions or conditions of exception for the black or Afro-Colombian communities in the University of Valle (Cali-Colombia). The policies implemented since 2004 to date have served to facilitate the entry of the Afro-Colombian population into the university, thus addressing the pro-found inequality of opportunities and the strong racial barriers faced by these groups in Colombia. In general terms, there is a growing and more active female participation that demands access to the university. This is manifested in the high percentage of female applicants in the different programs. Despite this, in most cases the number of Afro-Colombian women admitted remains be-low that of men. There is also a greater permanence and female graduation in the different programs. In any case, despite the achievements, there is a strong structural in-equality in education in the country, which affects Afro-Colombians in particular.
