Gillan contends that thoughts cause actions which cause habits. The operating system of the brain has a limited capacity and habits are a useful tool to get round this. If one can automate actions that he repeats often, he can save his cognitive resources for more taxing problems. If every action one made throughout the day was this arduous, the simple task of tying his shoelaces would take as much effort as planning that first trip to the office. Luckily one's brains are smarter than this, thanks to habits.
