    La notable distancia que existe entre Extremadura y el mar, o que las sirenas nunca hayan existido, no parecen argumentos suficientes para impedir que estas criaturas fabulosas aparezcan en el acervo cultural extremeño. De todos los seres fantásticos que habitan la imaginación de los seres humanos pocos gozan de referencias tan duraderas como las sirenas, que son reconocidas tanto por niños como por adultos. En la historia del mundo estas criaturas fantásticas han estado presentes en la literatura y en las artes a lo largo de los siglos. Pero también en los libros de historia natural hasta bien entrado el siglo XVIII. En Extremadura las sirenas –buenas y malas– habitan en casas antiguas, iglesias, catedrales, leyendas, fuentes y ríos repartidos por buena parte de la Comunidad

    The remarkable distance between Extremadura and the sea or that sirens have never existed do not seem to be sufficient arguments to prevent these amazing creatures from appearing in the cultural heritage of Extremadura. Of all the fantastic beings that have inhabited the imagination of human beings, sirens are one of the best known among children and adults. In the history of the world these fantastic creatures have been present in literature and art from the beginning of time, but also in Natural History books until the eighteenth century. In Extremadura, mermaids and sirens –both good and bad ones– live in churches, cathedrals, legends, fountains and rivers spread over the Community
