    • The article discusses the battle among U.S. educators regarding the study and teaching of traditional mathematics, which emphasizes algorithms and teacher-centered learning, and reform mathematics, which focuses on the underlying concepts of math and student inquiry. A historical overview of when the dispute began, including the creation of standards by the U.S. National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) that changed the way math was taught, is presented.
