  • Resumen
    • The article discusses how the discovery by neuroscientists of malfunctioning connections in underlying psychological disorders, such as depression, is forcing psychiatrists to rethink the causes of mental illness. According to the authors, in most areas of medicine, doctors have historically tried to glean understanding of the underlying cause of a patient's illness prior to prescribing a treatment. In many mental or behavioral disorders no physical cause was detectable and doctor's made the assumption that the cause was solely mental. Topics include how scientific approaches based on modern biology, neuroscience and genomics has yielded new approaches in the treatment of mental illness, such as schizophrenia which is viewed and treated as a developmental brain disorder.
