Resumen de Bilingualism in international families

Masayo Yamamoto

  • This paper discusses patterns of language use in international families where the native language of one parent is Japanese and the other English. First, the demographic and linguistic background of international families as a whole in Japan is briefly introduced. Then, using data from some small‐scale surveys of international families, patterns of language use among family members, such as those between spouses, between parents and their children, and among siblings, are analysed. Two problems facing international families, biliteracy and conspicuousness, are discussed. The paper concludes with suggestions for the future research.
