Visualización de los roles de género en las fotografías etnográficas de mapuches y tehuelches (siglos XIX-XX)

    En este trabajo nos proponemos revisar críticamente las representaciones de género, especialmente las representaciones del género femenino, en las fotografías etnográficas de mapuches y tehuelches, obtenidas por militares, científicos y misioneros religiosos que recorrieron la región patagónica y mantuvieron un contacto directo con estas poblaciones a fines del siglo XIX y comienzos del XX. Para ello, analizamos un corpus de 689 fotografías (353 de grupos mapuche y 336 de grupos tehuelche) desde la perspectiva de la “arqueología visual” y centrados en las variables de edad, vestimenta y ornamentos. Así, encontramos que estas imágenes permiten rescatar no sólo la visión de los fotógrafos acerca de las mujeres indígenas, sino también la visión de las propias mujeres y sus femineidades no hegemónicas.

    In this work we propose to critically review the gender representations, especially of female gender, in the ethnographic photographs of Mapuches and Tehuelches obtained by military-men, scientists and religious missionaries who went over the Patagonian region and maintained direct contact with these populations during the late 19th Century and early 20th Century. To do this, we analyzed a corpus of 689 photographs (353 of Mapuche groups and 336 of Tehuelche groups) from the perspective of the "visual archaeology" and focused on the variables of age, dress and ornaments. Thus, we find that these images allow us access to not only the photographers' view of indigenous women, but also women´s view of themselves and their non-hegemonic femininity.
