Resumen de The disappearance of American Indian languages

Barbara J. Boseker

  • It has been reported that only 206 Native American languages remain; this is a third of the original number, and of these approximately 50 are near extinction. Why are these languages disappearing? What are the various issues involved in ensuring that Native American languages are sustained and nurtured? What are the socio‐cultural factors which make it so difficult for Native American cultures as well as languages to exist? Are there some success stories of language maintenance instead of shift? Possible solutions are offered to the question of the disappearance of these minority languages.
