La protección radiológica del medioambiente ha despertado un interés creciente en los últimos 25 años, aceptándose actualmente a nivel internacional la necesidad de disponer de un sistema que permita demostrar explícitamente que el medioambiente está adecuadamente protegido frente a los efectos nocivos de las radiaciones ionizantes. Para ello, numerosas organizaciones internacionales, europeas y nacionales llevan años trabajando muy activamente en este tema.
El presente trabajo describe como ha evolucionado la protección radiológica del medioambiente en las últimas décadas, resaltando el conocimiento adquirido y las metodologías y herramientas desarrolladas para su implementación, así como las perspectivas futuras.

The radiation protection of the environment has led to growing interest in the last 25 years. Currently it is internationally accepted the need for a system which allows to explicitly demonstrate that the environment is adequately protected against the harmful effects of ionising radiation. To contribute to the development of this system, many international, European and national organizations have been actively working in the last decades.
This paper describes how the radiological protection of the environment has evolved in the last decades, highlighting the knowledge acquired and the methodologies and tools developed, as well as the future perspectives in the field.
