This paper is the fi rst of a two-part introduction to bridge design for structural engineers. Together, the two parts identify nine major issues relating to bridges, of which structural engineers more familiar with building design should be aware. Part 1 addresses construction, aesthetics, value, environment and loads; while Part 2 will cover materials, elements, eff ects and detailing.
The papers make the case for bridge design to be overseen by a single guiding hand – an experienced and creative bridge engineer with a wide range of social, visionary and technical skills.
