This paper briefly considers past and recent research in the field of bilingualism and then proceeds to describe a project which attempted to turn the educational failure of a group of children in a situation of subtractive bilingualism into success. Parents, teachers and a voluntary community group were able to get together to create a framework which attracted charitable trust funding. In so doing they increased their understanding of each other as well as improving the educational opportunities for the children involved.
